A Sad Day for Mankind

Computer WoesWell, not exactly a sad day for mankind! Exaggerating!

Have you read those accounts of great authors who lost entire book manuscripts and then wrote them all over again from scratch?

How do they do that? How do they have the gumption and stamina to do that?

I have been drafting blog entries in a draft folder I called Blogwriting. I have also been writing ideas for future blog entries in that folder. Yesterday, I had meant to delete an entry I had already posted on the blog, and this morning I discovered -- after the fact -- that it was one of those times when my highlighting skipped to the whole folder, and I unwittingly deleted everything in the folder. Yes, everything I had in that folder is gone, and, alas, there's no way to get it back!

A sad day for me to lose all I had already written! All my beautiful ideas for future blog entries are also gone, and I am not able to even remember what the ideas were except for one. The one idea I do remember was to write about all the jobs I've had, and there happen to be quite a few.

I'm taking this dire tragedy pretty well, don't you think!

This leads me now to writing my drafts right here in this place where I posted them before only when they were ready to post. This is the place Heaven Admin provided me with, but which I have been hesitant to write in spontaneously.

Of course, now I realize that drafts here are safe. At least, I think they are safe. If I pay attention, they are safe.

One thing I do remember is that I had written in great length, in response to a request from Engin, about all the traveling I have done. Actually, what I had written was so long, it was going to have to be split into two parts. I have all the information in my head, and I could write it all over again. I could. Of course, I could.

And yet I don't know that I can muster the energy those great authors did to reconstruct what they had written and lost. Maybe you have to be a great author to do that.

In any case, I do suspect we will all manage very well without knowing about my travels.

Thanks for a good laugh, Gloria. Something quite to the contrary happened to me with my computer. The other day, without me having done anything different from usual, suddenly many old files appeared on the computer, some of them delated more than three years ago.
Mysteries of the modern technology.

Now THAT is truly amazing, Paula! You made me laugh too!

I've had that happen to me Gloria!

I lost a whole book and after it had been proofed too!!!
I had it backed up on a disc too, which I had sent to the printers, for them to copy off, and they lost the disc, and my other disc at home, got a fault on it, and would not open, so I just had to start from scratch and re-type the whole thing again!

I also lost most of my hard drive about a year ago.
I had backed up, as we do, but not as often as we should, so again I lost mountains of information.

But,
instead of choosing to be 'down' about it, I decided to take it as a blessing, after all I had had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to have a good old clutter clear, and kept putting it off, so The Universe did it for me in one fell swoop!
whoosh!!!

I then went out and bought a new puter, and started from scratch again, on a clean blank 'page'
and it felt sooo good!!!

There is indeed a Blessing in everything!

So keep smiling Dear Heart! :)

Love Mary

:)

PS Love the image!
Did Santhan put that in!?!

I wrote letters once and posted them as well now if no e-mail address no mail from Jack. Sorry I got a letter the other day from a old flame and she asked for my e-mail address as she was going to get another computer.so I wrote a letter longhand I hope she does not have to go to a drugstore to decode as my writing is so bad that I have trouble reading it myself. Every day something gets lost on my computer specially in the middle of reading something interesting and 'poof' gone Oh well I was not supposed to read that, Funny That has never happened to heaven letters . Any way next week we are going away for a few weeks on a small cruise, Hope the cruise ship does not do a "poof" on us. Will see you till Tuesday as we leave Wednesday morning at 5am. love you ALL Jack

Yes, the image is really hilarious. I love it too.

And what you said is so true dear Mary. Such computer annoyances can also be considered as blessings. Furthermore, I would tend to consider them as firm demands from "above" to do better.

For example, it happened to me very often that I start writing a long post on a forum, and then I lose everything, be it because of power failure or any other technical incident. When such a thing happens I always take it as a very clear sign meaning something like "No, no, no ! This one wasn't appropriate dear one !"
Then I go back with a shorter and clearer post or something radically different. Sometimes I even don't post anything at all.

Well... This time it didn't happen so I guess my post is ok ! lol

Much love,

Cédric

PS : Dear Gloria, I still and all really empathise, for such a data loss can be so much irritating and frustrating. I'm glad you could take it with a touch of humor.

Dear Gloria,
I thought you were writing about Martin Luther King, Jr. when I read the title.
Well, of course it's a little bit sad that you lost all that info and you put time into it. I do like the perspective of Mary above who took the loss as a new beginning.
That's what I did when we had our house fire and lost half our possessions. It was actually a good thing(after we got over the year it took to get back into our home.....)
Sigh,
Jacqueline

Dearest Gloria,
Could your files in your 'draft folder' have ended up in your 'Recycle Bin'? And.....you haven't emptied the 'Recycle Bin' yet? Then, they could be found there by date and 'restored'. I really feel for you, especially since my computer went "Poooof" a little while ago and we haven't been able to retrieve the info in the hard drive so far. There is still some slight chance that it can be done or,...........will have to see a blessing in it.

I had a good laugh seing the cartoon, because I saw myself in it!

Good luck!
Xenia

This wasn't really a sad day for mankind! Not even a sad day for me! It was a minor annoyance. I have to have something to write for the blog. Naturally, I have to dramatize it! I can't just say, I lost a draft!

Getting back to Mary's comment, yes, indeed, Santhan put the image up. Any image that goes up here, he put it there. No job is too big or too little for Heaven Admin!

I dream that when we are on the motor trip (sometime toward spring) he will be able to show me how to do it in two minutes' flat, and I will "get" it.

I used to try to do it myself. I would spend hours. By chance, an image might go up, and I wouldn't know why it did and all the others didn't. So far as I could tell, I was doing the same thing. Hmm, as a matter of fact, I do have a lot of computer drama!

ctrl Z
The magic buttons on the keyboard. Press them at the same time and the action will be undone. It has to be done immediately after the unwanted action.

In computers that have Microsoft Windows installed, there is a recycle bin. Most things deleted, accidentally or on purpose, will go there.

Bleep.

Oceans of Love

Alas, I did not discover the loss until a few days later! Too late for ctrl Z.

However, in a later blog entry, you will see I accused the computer wrongly. The words were not lost. They were there all the time. Someone didn't scroll down far enough.
