How to write a blog
You may remember that it was at Heaven Admin's suggestion that this blog came into being. Of course, as with Heavenletters™ I just plunged into something without any idea of what I was doing.
What was the first blog entry?
It turns out that the first entry was fittingly about Heaven Admin.
The second was about miracles, another favorite topic, in which I said:
I have experienced bona fide miracles. I just don’t know what to connect the miracles to. It seems I don’t know what to make of things. And so I have choppy anecdotes rather than a story.
And so this blog has been mostly about my trying to make sense of things, and many things pop into my head.
Just recently, a friend of mine wanted to start her own blog and asked what open-source program I would recommend.
I said, "Wordpress," of course.
Then, for the first time, only four years after this blog started, I went to Wordpress and read about what a blog is supposed to be like!
What I discovered is that I have not done a blog the way a blog is supposed to be done. Not at all. You are supposed to choose one topic, one topic only. If this is a Godwriting™ blog, it should be about Godwriting, not my family, not about opening a bank account, not about pets, not about my daughter, not about recipes or restaurants. The Godwriting blog should have a mood. It should be serious. I don't think it is supposed to have my attempts at humor.
I see now that I have made my blog a mongrel.
Frankly, this blog has its similarities to Lewis Carrol's Alice in Wonderland. Change the word word to blog:
"When I use a word," said Humpty Dumpty scornfully, " it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less."
"The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things."
"The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master - - that's all."
And so, without knowing I was off-track, I made the Godwriting blog to be about anything I wanted it to be whenever I felt like it. I took on all the topics of my life. I took on all the topics of the world! I took on Christopher Columbus, for example. I took on book reviews. Movies. Little known facts about my life. And, oh, yes, Godwriting and Heavenletters, too, thrown in.
I became the master of my own blog because I didn't know any differently.
But, honestly, if I always had to be professional – I couldn't have done it. I couldn't have stayed with one topic. I don't think I could have. The thing is I may have been writing this blog for myself and enjoying it too much.
It may be time for me to become professional. It may well be, but, still, I don't think I can do it.
If it were not for Heavenletters, no one would ever have come here. Of course, if it were not for Heavenletters, Heaven Admin would never have asked me to start a blog either. If it weren't for Heavenletters, you wouldn't be here either. If it weren't for Heavenletters, I would be nowhere.
Comments
Exactly. And since Heavenletters are the backdrop for where we are and what we do, this blog is just right. As Heavenreaders, we can't afford to stick with the consensus world view. As a blog writer, be not concerned with how a blog is supposed to be set up.
From Heavenletters to Godwriting, you, God, the motley ramblings on this blog and your beloved readers, there is no separation. Whatever it appears we come for, we come for one thing.
Gloria, please don't think of changing anything about what you are doing here. If anyone needs to read a "professional" blog, I'm sure the choices are in the thousands. This one is unique and priceless.
If nothing else, your stories demonstrate that you aren't the author of Heavenletters in case anyone was wondering. My favorites have been family stories and critter stories. Always looking forward to the next installment.
Dear Professional Blog Mongrel,
Thank you for telling me about Wordpress. I too shall follow your lead and not conform even on Wordpress but will wag my tail through it, barking sometimes and at all times sniffing around in inappropriate places. Loving you, Dianita
Your comments are the greatest part of the blog! What a beautiful loyal bunch you are!
