Middlesex -- what a book

 200px-middlesex_novel.jpg

There are so many utterly wonderful books around. How does an author write them. Where does all the talent come from?

This book won the Pulitzer Prize.  Deservedly. Oprah chose this book for her book club. Good.

So many books I've been reading lately are simple superb and one of a kind. It makes no sense to say one is better than another, for each is unique. But, if I had to choose, right now I would have to choose Middlesex. What writing. What characters. What history. This is one of the best fiction books I've ever read. What a writer!

Here's part of a review I found somewhere:

"Eugenides swiftly surpasses all the expectations the literary world held him to, creating a flawless Greek epic so compelling Homer himself should leap from his grave to pat Eugenides on the back. Middlesex is pure brilliance, a novel that most surely will secure its place in the literary canon for generations to come. "

When I finished Middlesex, I thought I would never find another book good enough to read.

But I did, and I'll tell you more about this other book another time. I will say it's very different from Middlesex and also wonderful.

I am so happy when I have a good book.

I am reading two good books that I highly recommend also:

Susan Cheever's biography of Louisa May Alcott and

the Autobiography of Mark Twain.

Both non-fiction, both entirely different in style.

Both give us a more intimate picture of two very well known American authors.
