Typee
As I go through some of the classics that are in literature anthologies I read, I see many photographs of well-known authors and poets. my tendency has been to see these wel-known authors as rather stuffy and old-fashioned.
But when I read their writings, I find these writers are contemporary and filled with a modern-day awareness of life. Their facial expressions and dress may be somber, and they may seem so serious and old-fashioned, but once I start reading their words, these authors turn out to be real people with a great sense of humor. They don’t nearly take themselves so seriously as their photographs portray. And, so, as I read their words, these authors aren't old-fashioned any more, and I hold these authors and their consciousness very dear. I believe that books have been my great teachers.
For the first time I read an excerpt from Typee by Herman Melville. Typee is a novel about a native tribe in the South Seas. It’s told in the first person by a Westerner who was marooned on a Polynesian island.[All quotations are taken from Adventures in American Literature Pegasus Edition, Harcourt, Brace Jovanvich, Publishers.]
The main character tells us:
"The term ‘savage’ is, I conceive, often misapplied, and, indeed, when I consider the vices, cruelties, and enormities of overy kind that spring up in the tainted atmosphere of feverish civilization, I am inclined to think that so far as the relative wickedness of the parties is concerned, four or five Marquesan islanders sent to the United States as missionaries might be quite as useful as an equal number of Americans dispatched to the islands in a similar capacity…

We are there.
Jacqueline - I love the certainty with which you make your statement. You ARE there. I have a lot of glimpses and see the possibility...but I'm not standing there with two feet firmly planted as you are. Gloria, the synchronicity of Melville's observations with Spiritual truths is lovely! Some of our egos would like to think that we're the first to enter this territory and share these gems, but how great it is that there have been humans following these paths since the beginning of "perceived" time. Yes, I would love to go there.
Perpetual hilarity?
I think I'll join you.
I have seen Many in The east. Where the people Just live their lives for each other. And I learned a lot from them,
Mainly in the Local villages. Respect for the chairman of the village but no respect for the politicians.Thank you western civilization. Here our community is just about perfect. We have the best supermarket I have ever seen. Some body waiting at the checkout another is opened. All checkouts full. I have seen the Manager going around with a big box of chocolates " sorry you have to wait, We do our best to get you through as soon as possible" this happened when a cyclone was eminent. Most people smile. Good Mornings are heard all the time and people will help others whenever needed. Yes Jacqueline we are there. Love to you All. Jack
Dear Jack, you have created Heaven around you!
There's something about island life. Its so mellow.
There is something about the industrialised world...its so challenging!
I think its easy to be happy and care free. It's wanting more than that, that brings about the challenges. Being happy and care free is a state one may carry while searching for more than that.
"Now that I'm in Heaven, what's next?"
